Buying clothes in 2011 that look like they come from the future is no mean feat – which is why we had quite a lot of creative fun coming up with the costumes for the Third Base cast.

We needed to strike the right blend of uniform vs civilian – all with a futuristic twist of course! Taking inspiration from our own favourite sci fi shows (Battlestar Galactica, anyone?), modern teenage fashion and, of course, what we could find on short notice in Sydney, we came up with a utilitarian, military-inspired look with a few special touches.
One awesome crew member, Troy Zarb, made his way down to Paddy’s Markets to pick up more pairs of matching cargo pants that we could count, which we paired with reverse-layered tops (singlets over long-sleeves – hey, it could happen in the future). Everyone on Third Base also has official name badges – but more on that in a minute.
We wanted our adult characters to have more of an ‘offical’ look. You might notice that both Kasinksy and Riley’s dad are sporting official-looking jackets with badges – if you look really closely, you might notice that it’s actually the same jacket!
Starting with a basic green-grey jacket ($80 on sale in Myer), we added red piping around the sleeves (hand-sewn by Kaitlyn Critchley) and neckline for a attention-grabbing finish. Director Ric Forster designed an arm badge specific to the Third Base project – thanks to the magic of iron-on transfers, we simply printed it out, transferred it onto a piece of fabric and then attached it to the jacket.
Iron-on transfers were also used for the name badges – nearly every character wears one – but what you don’t see is that they’re attached to the uniforms with double-sided tape! Ah, self-funding.
